What can the MLA Office do on my behalf?
We can contact provincial departments on your behalf, clarify rules or decisions, request updates, and help keep communication moving. Our services include:
- Navigation and program referral
- Helping with program and grant applications
- Advocacy with provincial departments
- Letters of recognition for important milestones
- Meetings with the MLA about policy, legislative or community issues
Can the MLA Office help with emergencies?
We are NOT a service provider and our office does not have round the clock staffing. For emergencies, call 911. For direct or immediate access to provincial programs, call 811.
Should I call the MLA or the MP?
MLAs deal with provincial issues. If it relates to healthcare, MSI, education, childcare, housing, tenancy, provincial roads or highways, labour standards, or any program run by a Nova Scotia department. MPs deal with federal issues. If it involves taxes, passports, immigration, EI, CPP, OAS, GIS, or the CRA it’s federal.
If you’re unsure, just call us and we’ll point you in the right direction.
Does the MLA Office handle Municipal issues?
Municipal issues aren’t handled by the MLA office, but we’ll happily direct you to the right municipal contact. Municipalities look after local issues like:
- Zoning and building permits
- Local roads
- Water and sewer
- Property taxes
Can the MLA help with MSI?
Yes. We can help replace cards, update information, answer billing questions, look into coverage concerns, and support appeals.
Can the Office help with Housing NS?
Yes. We can assist with applications, maintenance issues, rent supplements, and communication challenges.
We can’t assign units, move someone up a waitlist, or change policy, but we can help you navigate the process.
Can the MLA help with Residential Tenancies?
We can explain the steps, help you find the right forms, and connect you with resources and supports. We cannot give legal advice, represent you, or intervene in disputes between landlords and tenants.
What can’t the MLA Office do?
Even if we can’t handle something directly, we’ll guide you to the right place. Some of the things we can’t do include:
- Change medical waitlists or clinical decisions
- Provide legal advice or intervene in legal disputes
- Force a landlord, tenant, employer, or department to act
- Overrule municipal, provincial or federal decisions
- Help with federal programs (passports, CRA, EI, CPP, OAS, GIS, immigration)
Can I meet with the MLA directly?
Yes. Residents of Lunenburg West are welcome to meet with the MLA.
Our staff may gather some details first so the MLA is fully prepared for the conversation
What should I have ready when I call?
It’s helpful to have:
- Your name and address
- Any file or reference numbers
- Dates of letters, decisions or appointments
- Any other relevant documents
What happens after I contact the Office?
We’ll review your details, obtain your consent where necessary, reach out to the appropriate provincial department, follow up as needed, and keep you updated.
If the situation requires it, we will escalate it within the department.
Does the MLA provide letters and certificates?
Yes. We offer recognition for birthdays, anniversaries, retirements, volunteer service, and other milestones. We can also request congratulatory messages from the Premier or the Lieutenant Governor for eligible occasions.
